Boston Scientific Corp. Purchases Guidant Corp. April 2006
Boston Scientific Corp., an internationally known developer, manufacturer and marketer of various medical devices,
purchased under-fire rival company Guidant Corp. in April 2006 for approximately $28 billion. Guidant has
been troubled by personal injury and wrongful death litigation since June 2005 because of a litany of mild to severe
device malfunctions affecting a variety of Guidant pacemakers, Guidant ICDs and Guidant CRTs. Boston Scientific Corp.
opted to take advantage of Guidant's troubles through the expansion of its own business.
Unfortunately for Boston Scientific, they assumed Guidant's liabilities as a part of the transaction.
In addition to the many defective device models that have already warranted safety advisories, warnings and recalls,
Boston Scientific was forced to issue another recall of six models that had previously been unaffected. This latest
Guidant-related recall affected the following models:
- Vitality defibrillators
- Vitality 2 defibrillators
- Ventak Prizm 2 defibrillators
- Contak Renewal TR/TR2 CRTs
- Insignia pacemakers
- Nexus pacemakers
Of the devices linked with this most recent recall, only two cases have resulted in serious injury;
none have yet resulted in death. Noting Guidant's liabilities, Boston Scientific felt it was prudent
to take a proactive approach in limiting any serious injuries caused by possible defects.
